Project Overview
The Smiths Lake project delivered 10 new habitat assets, creating more than 260 litres of nesting habitat for hollow-dependent wildlife. By accelerating a natural process that typically takes 100–300 years, these trees can now provide valuable habitat for generations of native species while retaining mature trees within the landscape.
Project Outcomes
10 habitat assets installed, including carved tree hollows and habitat tubes.
More than 260 litres of nesting habitat created for hollow-dependent wildlife.
Habitat designed for six target species, including Squirrel Gliders, Greater Gliders, Glossy Black-Cockatoos, owls and large parrots.
An estimated 1,700 years of natural hollow formation accelerated, creating habitat that would otherwise take decades to centuries to develop naturally.
Mature trees retained and enhanced, improving biodiversity while maintaining a safe and functional landscape.
Project Highlight
One of the standout features of the project was a purpose-built Glossy Black-Cockatoo hollow, carved by Scott. The tree's near-vertical fracture created an ideal opportunity to replicate the deep, narrow cavities preferred by this species. Every dimension was carefully considered to encourage Glossy Black-Cockatoos while discouraging larger competing species from occupying the hollow.
